Course Objectives:

  1. Reviewing what effective written and verbal communication looks like
  2. Vocabulary building
  3. Reviewing and creating various forms of written communication
  4. Reviewing and developing appropriate reading skills for various texts
  5. Developing and practicing verbal communication and listening skills

 

Topics of study:

 

  • Vocabulary
    • Students will be responsible for learning 10 vocabulary words each week
    • Spelling, pronunciation, and meaning will be tested each Friday
    • Sentence usage required.

 

  • Grammar/Usage Review
    • Parts of speech
    • Sentence Structure
    • Using and understanding the Six Traits of Writing
    • Formatting of written communication

 

  • Verbal Communication Skills/Speeches
    • Students will present formal speeches
    • Students will participate in informal speaking situations
    • Students will listen to and analyze the spoken word

 

  • Reading Skills
    • Students will read from and discuss a variety of material including, but not limited to: newspapers, works of fiction and non-fiction, web-based materials, and various forms of personal communication

 

  • The Freedom Writers Diary
    • Students will read The Freedom Writers Diary and complete class activities relating to the text

 

Grades will be based on mastery of the following skills:

  • Mechanics - 10%
  • Vocabulary - 15%
  • Reading comprehension and application - 25%
  • Speaking and listening - 25%
  • Writing - 25%
